MediaShout Mac crashes repeatedly

I just purchased MediaShout for Mac and downloaded it. It quits every time I try a select a file - no matter what it is. I get the initial window, try to select something, and then it quits. VERY frustrating.

Melissa, unfortunately we are experiencing a known issue where the app will crash when browsing for media files. You may be able to drag from outside the app or add as background for an existing cue as a workaround. Also, iMac computers are having some major instability issues for some reason as well. We are trying to figure out why and get this fixed as well.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. These are logged as high priority bugs for our developers to fix as soon as they can.

    Thanks for your patience.

Has this been remedied yet for iMac? We love the simplicity of MediaShout and would purchase it over ProPresenter in a HEARTBEAT but the demo crashes constantly on this (relatively) new iMac.

We just bought a band new iMac and MediaShout for Mac. We had visions of stability and ease of use. We have yet to have a session where MediaShout hasn't crashed during a service. We have multiple IT Directors troubleshooting the issue and we have begun to have PCs in the back on standby knowing that MediaShout for Mac will crash... because it does every single time.

If you're browsing these files thinking about buying MediaShout for Mac, don't. It's highly unstable no matter your hardware or what elements you are running.

If you're a MediaShout employee, please notify us when you have achieved a stable version. Until them, were back to our PC!

    MediaShout,

Heres' a list of events that lead to crashes this weekend.

    1. Doing a batch timing edit on multiple jpegs
    2. Playing an avi file
    3. Playing an mov file
    4. Inserting jpegs
    5. Editing a song cue (happens more frequently when you edit a fired cue)
    6. Browsing for media using the MediaShout Media Browser

Each event caused multiple crashes per event. Some crashes allowed MediaShout to reopen quickly. Some crashes would cause the app to bounce in the dock and then display an error. Some would bounce then never open and we would retry. Some would bounce, the app light would illuminate, but would never bring the app up and clicking on the app in the dock did nothing. Restarting made no difference. Changing permissions made no difference. I suspect unplugging the secondary monitor would make a difference in a stalled app.

    Hope this helps...

I'm extremely disappointed with my purchase, I'm a bi-vocational pastor and sacrificed to purchase this. And now it seems I spend more time trying to get this "simple" program to work Thant I do prepping to minister.

Yup, I'm just back here to stop receiving the updates from GetSatisfaction. We've officially left MediaShout for ProPresenter, and couldn't be happier.

Sorry MS, you've bit the hand that feeds you, and I don't see a stable business moving forward. I'm sad for this since you did (at one time) have an outstanding product.

I have been trying to get the Mac version to work for a year now and it still crashes every time I try to build a presentation. updates have not fixed the problem as I have been promised repeatedly. my Easter presentation crashed 11 times in two days of building and then crashed 4 times while trying to play it yesterday.

sad I’m getting annoyed it is still broken i basic functions
I also have been having crashes mainly when in lyrics. I also am noticing a HUGE delay if I go to edit a template for the bible display.

When it does crash I tend to know it is coming. In the preview of the lyrics it stops showing the background and goes black background in the preview (not the live). Then just before crash the test in the preview appears HUGE in the way of only showing a few letters.

I am not sure if this is tied to the media I am using as backgrounds, but I am using primarily smaller video loops (480p) in MP4 and mopv format. Have not seen any difference in either as one crashign more than another.

We just bought a new IMAC and Media Shout for MAC last week, but after reading these comments, I'm ready to ask for a refund! Anyone in MediaShout land willing to tell me it's going to work???? Or that I should spend the hours loading all the songs since not a single song of modern worship music is preloaded in the version we bought for $429.

I have just gone back to PC version following an incredibly frustrating 12 months trying to get the Mac version to work. This has been a costly and unsatisfactory experience - not to mention the embarrassment of trying to convince people of the value of using this program only to see it crash continually.
Had I not outlayed so much money I would be looking at an alternative program.

  • MediaShout has always had a return policy that allows customers to return their software within 30 days of their purchase. We understand that a small percentage of our Mac customers have experienced issues over the last 12 months. We are very pleased with the progress we've made in updating and improving the Mac version in that time, and the majority of customers who have experienced major problems have found that those problems have been solved. That said, we will honor any request for a refund, regardless of the purchase date, for those customers who wish to return the Mac product. We would encourage you to download the latest build, as we have seen vast improvement in both the performance and stability of the software in the last few months.

Nathaniel, I've downloaded most recent update but still find the program disappointing. Among key issues of concern are:
    1. inability to edit songs - including changing templates without receiving an error message.
    2. inability to set songs to not allow splitting (as per PC version)
    3. inability to change size of preview windows
    4. really poor - almost unusable - integration with Powerpoint and/or Keynote
    5. minimal improvement in stability
I really don't want a refund. What I would like is a program that shares reasonable similarities across platforms so that I don't have to basically teach people two different programs - as per ProPresenter 5

  • Mark,

I will try to address your issues as listed and hopefully get you in a better place.

    1. I cannot reproduce this on my end, however this is what I am seeing. I can edit and change templates without errors, but when I change templates, the editor will not reflect the background change or the Template name in the editor until I reopen the editor.
    2. Pagination of the cues is one of the most difficult areas to code, but we are working on it.
    3. Re-sizing of the viewers is also on the list of changes to be implemented.
    4. Power Point(2008 only) and Keynote are working, but not in the same way we are able to do on the PC version. Mac versions will not let us control them in the background like we can do with PPT on the PC. On Mac, the programs need to open and configured to present on the same display that Mediashout does.
    5. Playback has always been pretty solid except when you try to edit cues while trying to present or while playing other cues.

When the Mac version was designed, we specifically wanted to give it the look and feel as a native Mac program. We didn't want to create a mirror image of the PC program. For a native Mac user, this is a plus, but not so much for the PC user.

If you want to give me a call, I would be happy to remote into the system to see if there is anything I can do. I may have some tips that may help.

happy I’m excited for an upgrade
    Hi guys,
Ive talked to support several times, and i've done a podcast with Nate Ragan, the guy in charge of all of this, and while there are issues, I'm very confident that they are going to fix this. Mediashout has some great people there and they want to take care of you. And no, I don't work for them, I am just a customer that really believes in the product. Ive talked to Nate, and there will be updates coming, and i'm 100% confident that they are going to fix this. You can listen to it at thechurchtechgeeks.com , or if you want to contact me, as someone outside of media shout you can at timothy (at) thechurchtechgeeks (dot) com

I really love the product and its still what i recommend to people, and I can't wait for the day that update comes!

    sad I’m pretty angry
I have been trying to get this damn thing to work for almost a year. Got it to work once. ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! What amazes me is that we use this for church on the PC and it's easy. I have a MAC and they bought me this program to help run programs for our Women's ministry and not only is it so very different from the PC version, it's harder to use and it crashes all the time. I now can't get it to load at all.

I want my church to get their full money back as this is a HUGE amount of money spent on something that doesn't work.

    • Sherri,

I am so sorry that a simple and innocent mistake has caused so much chatter. I never thought it would get so much attention. The reason I did not initially include a reason for the removal of the reply was to avoid all this.
    • If I would have seen the remarks made 6 months ago, 6 months ago, I would have taken the same action.

Although I don't think it is necessary, given the situation, all is forgiven. I too, ask for forgiveness for initiateing all of this and causing you more grief on top of an already frustrating.

I like ally of you wanted this to work real bad because we loved in on our Windows machines.

I gave up on MediaShout for MAC but I will say that John Phillips was a great help in helping me get a refund for my church.

I found another cloud based presentation program that has worked great for us. still holding out hope that someday MS will get it together for MAC!

"Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear"(Ephesians 4:29 NASB)

Media shout Mac frustrates most of us who use it.

That does not excuse the use I profanity on a sight for church presentation software (or anywhere else for that matter. And yes the "D" word is profanity) frustration is not an excuse to say whatever you want to. As followers of Jesus, we live by and are held to a higher standard. Act like it! Would you allow that language from your children, youth or adults in your programs at church? No, you wouldn't and we are the examples that are to be followed. Just because it is "just an email" doesn't change a thing nor does it cancel the clear teaching of scripture.

"BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger,"(Ephesians 4:26 NASB)

If you don't like the product, ask for a refund. The guys at media shout have been quick to offer that as an option and have fulfilled refunds far after the written return period.

Let's all try to voice our frustration in a way that brings honor to the King and Savior we serve.

While I understand the reservation to leaving the post up, it brings up some very valid points about the absolute frustration of MediaShout users. In fact, some users do feel that this app should be damned (everlasting punishment of sin) and live it's entire existence divorced from church production.

I do appreciate your willingness assist, and 99% of the time, user input is beneficial. However, and I am sure Sherri would agree, in cases like this, it can make an already uncomfortable situation more uncomfortable. Please keep this in mind as we move past all of this.
